Lamborghini Enters the World of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs)

After a number of social media posts that hint at it, Italian supercar-maker Lamborghini has finally announced its first NFT (non-fungible token) project. The project is dubbed Space Key and developed in collaboration with an undisclosed artist, it is inspired by a piece advanced carbon fiber composite material that was sent to the International Space Station for research purposes.

Lamborghini, the Italian supercar maker is making its first step into the world non-fungible tokens (NFTs). This allows owners to guarantee authenticity, scarcity, and trackability of tokens via the internet.

Working with NFT PRO, a white-label NFT solution for businesses, Lamborghini is taking this unique approach to art to a new level. In the coming weeks the company will be sharing details about this exciting project including the name of the unidentified artist and a timeline for the auction.

After a series of social media posts hinting at something that was space-related, the Italian supercar manufacturer Lamborghini has entered the world of non-fungible (NFT) tokens through an exclusive project dubbed Space Key. The NFT was created in collaboration with a mysterious artist and will be auctioned off in a few short weeks. Its underlying structure is composed of a high-tech carbon fibre composite material, which was sent to the International Space Station in 2019 as part of a research program. Carbon fiber was 3D-printed for the base of every Space Key. Each Space Key is linked to an exclusive digital artwork by way of QR codes. Only five Space Keys were produced.

NFTs are unique identifiers that are recorded on distributed ledgers such the Blockchain and linked to a digital asset such as images. It's a hot topic with people who have more money than they have common sense. So it was only a question of time before automakers decided to take advantage of.

After weeks of social media posts hints, luxury car maker Lamborghini finally announced its first venture for tokens that are non-fungible (NFT). Called the Space Key, it consists of five physical items that unlock an exclusive digital art work NFT by an artist yet to be identified. The project was developed in collaboration with NFT PRO(tm), the "collector's item" is limited to only five units and will be auctioned off soon.

At the center of each Space Key is a block of advanced carbon fire composite material, which was sent to the International Space Station in 2019 as part of a research project. After returning to Earth, the block was engraved using a QR codes that link to the digital element in the Space Key.

Each of the five Space Keys will feature a separate moment that occurs seconds apart as the Lamborghini Ultimae lifts off toward the stars. Over 600 million pixels up each of the five images which were taken by photographer Fabian Oefner.

Oefner employed an inflatable camera fitted with a lens to capture the individual images, which were then assembled into the final photograph. The result is an out-of-this world image that captures the beauty of Earth as well as the futuristic, hyper-realistic picture of the car rising away from it. The Space Keys will be auctioned off soon, but the exact date and time of the event hasn't been set yet.

The auction

The auctions, which will begin between February 1 until February 4, last for 75 hours and 50 minutes - the same amount of time it took Apollo 11 to leave Earth and enter the lunar orbit. The five NFTs can be bought by making an online registration. Each will be sold separately and the winner will receive a digital artwork designed by renowned photographer Fabian Oefner, which captures the five different moments that the Space Key passed during its journey through space.
